The U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition is the largest sand-sculpting competition in the United States. Held in the sleepy southern California beach town Imperial Beach, the competition has been held since 1980.Although the event attracts a great number of attendees, it has almost no visual identity. The overall style of the design is a hodgepodge of Californian culture ranging from The Beach Boys image of Californians as laid-back, tanned beach-goers, the gold rush of the 1850’s, the hippy movement, and the sand sculptures themselves. I hoped to capture the simple, artistic nature of this event. I want to show that the event is about people, nature, and fun. It’s now an traditional southern California event, and I want to relay that in the design. A new identity, advertisments, stationary application, business cards were created.
